Alvarado Simone Dantas Dieter Rautenbach 1 Instituto de Matemática e Estat́ıstica, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, Brazil [email protected], [email protected] 2 Institute of Optimization and Operations Research, Ulm University, Ulm, Germany [email protected] Abstract For a set F of graphs, an instance of the F -free Sandwich Problem is a pair (G1, G2) consisting of two graphs G1 and G2 with the same vertex set such that G1 is a subgraph of G2, and the task is to determine an F -free graph G containing G1 and contained in G2, or to decide that such a graph does not exist. Initially motivated by the graph sandwich problem for trivially perfect graphs, which are the {P4, C4}-free graphs, we study the complexity of the F -free Sandwich Problem for sets F containing two non-isomorphic graphs of order four. We show that if F is one of the sets {diamond,K4}, {diamond, C4}, {diamond, paw}, {

Subs and Sandwiches: Replacing One Ingredient By Another

The Earl system works in the domain of sandwich recipes. We show how Earl uses two sources of knowledge —ingredients knowledge that is extracted from a gastronomy web site, and a case base of sandwich recipes— to propose substitutes for ingredients in sandwich recipes. In particular, we describe four substitution methods: humanauthored substitutions, taxonomically-driven substitutions, lexicall...

Creating New Sandwiches From Old

Earl is a case-based reasoning system which works in the domain of sandwich recipes. It has a case base of 9,507 cases, each being a sandwich recipe which we scraped from the web. We show how Earl can compose new sandwiches from the ingredients of sandwiches that it retrieves from its case base. On each iteration, it inserts into the sandwich the candidate ingredient which results in greatest c...

Two modes of assessment: the case of academicians' writing

This study attempted to investigate writing problems and the relationship between expert-assessment and self-assessment of writing problems. Participants were thirty four non-English faculty members of Tehran and Guilan universities. The instruments were writing an essay on the topic "What teaching strategies do you use in your classes?" in twenty five lines and filling the questionnaire of wri...

Growth Profile and Toxigenicity of Bacillus cereus in Ready-to-eat Food Products of Animal Origin

The growth profile of Bacillus cereus in ready-to-eat (RTE) food products of animal origin was examined under different temperature and incubation conditions. In sandwiches and Kimbab, B. cereus did not grow or exhibited only minimal growth at 4 and 10oC, but it grew rapidly at ambient temperature. In sandwiches, B. cereus did not grow efficiently at 25oC, however, in ham, the main ingredient o...

White polarization sandwiches: optical elements with non-orthogonal eigenpolarizations

Optical elements with non-orthogonal eigenpolarizations have complex anisotropic properties, which are not yet well understood. As an example of such elements, we studied theoretically the class of white polarization sandwiches. Light passing successively through two identical white sandwiches preserves its polarization state, so that, following the terminology of Berry and Dennis, white polari...
